Q) Does our body need a detox through dieting occasionally? How often

Our body needs to be detoxified and thoroughly cleansed owing to the demerits of modern diet and lifestyle implications. Detoxification aids in releasing the accumulated toxins over a period of time. This cleansing may be taken up once or twice a year, especially during seasonal transitions, preferably during spring.

and at what age?

Although Ayurveda has not specified age limit but surely this program intends for the adult at ripe age. Children, pregnant and lactating mothers and old age people need to avoid.

Q) What kind of diet-related solutions does Ayurveda have for detoxification? Please explain in detail.

Ayurveda stresses detoxification to be taken up on individual basis. Ayurveda detox diet would be sort of fasting and relieving the abdomen by taking only fresh, raw fruits and steamed seasonal vegetables, water and yogurt. Some Ayurveda herbs like Ajwain, Bitter gourd, mint, basic, fenugreek and turmeric etc that can be included in detox diet. These natural herbs increase the normal production of the bile, thus results to a more efficient bowel movement and elimination of toxins from the body.

Q) What’s the difference between fasting and detox diet?

Practically there is not much of a difference between the two. But when we include the Ayurveda cleansing and detoxifying herbs and the process of Panchakarma (Watch Video)  along with following the fasting regimen, then it is more of Ayurveda detox diet.

Q) What body organs does detox diet affect?

The elimination channels of the body viz. lungs, kidneys, intestines and the skin, work more efficiently to get rid of the wastes. Also, liver is another vital organ that tends to be cleansed via detox diet.

Q) Can a detox diet be done without supervision? Why?

Although a simple detox plan may be taken up all by oneself, but for derivation of thorough results it is advisable to be supervised by a physician. Ayurveda physician would focus on your Prakriti (basic personality) and suggest the diet and therapy in accordance to the same so as to combat the toxins (Vikruti).

Q) Which are the best Ayurvedic detox diets that you recommend? Please give details.

I would recommend Ayurveda detox diet that includes nutritional supplements and herbs, breathing exercises of Yoga called Pranayama and hydro therapy undertaken in Naturopathy.

Here are some natural herb remedies that may be taken up during the course of detox diet.

Ø Bishop’s weed or Ajwain is also possessor of some unique anti toxic properties. Also, this herb is diuretic by nature. Therefore it aids greatly to expel toxins and work as a natural detox.

Ø Bitter gourd juice could help you combat toxins inside the body and it also helps eradicate intestinal worms.

Ø Ginger may be included in detox diet as it is a good cleanser and purifier for the body.

Ø Basil is another Ayurveda herb that possesses health-giving assets and has proven anti toxic properties.

Ø The herb of turmeric being light, rough and hot and having pungent and bitter taste bitter after-taste, is another excellent detox agent.

Q) Are there any dangers of detox diets / fasting? What all should you keep in mind while taking this type of diet?

There are no known dangers. During the detoxification regime, the diet intake needs to be light, warm and nourishing. This may include organic green, leafy vegetables and seasonal fruits, soups and fewer amounts of grains like barley, wheat and rice. Vegetable juices like cabbage, carrot, beetroot with lemon drops is excellent. Good amount of water intake would help in flushing out toxin via urination. Moreover, non vegetarian diet, heavy spicy and fried meals, intake of alcohol, tea and coffee are strictly prohibited.

Q) Who all should avoid any kind of detox diet?

Children, very emaciated patients, very old people, pregnant and lactating mother.
