Hot and scorching summers make us vulnerable to heat related disorders like prickly heat, excessive perspiration, occasional dizziness, sun burns and loss of strength and stamina. Not only this, as is happening in parts of Northern and Southern India, the heat wave has gripped us with the death toll showing to be worse than 2003. Although, both the conditions of heat exhaustion & heat stroke are mostly seen in summers of the tropical regions and occurs when the body temperature rises above normal temperature. Global warming is likely to increase the frequency of “extreme heat events”. The most common heat-related illness is heat exhaustion, whose symptoms include high fever, absence of perspiration, intense thirst, heavy sweating, anxiety, dizziness, fainting, nausea or vomiting, and headache.

Ayurveda For Hot Summers

Ayurveda provides reasonable assistance in case of heat exhaustion which is known as Aanshughata Jwara and heat stroke which is known as Aanshughata Sannipata. There are some necessary precautions to stay clear of the hot climatic conditions. ‘Prevention is better than cure’ There is essential need to be taking lots of liquids even if one does not feel thirsty in the hot summers. This prevents the body fluids from falling below the minimum levels due to excessive sweat and perspiration. You need to increase the intake of liquids, particularly water. Spicy, hot and fried foods are a no-no for the summer season. As much is possible, avoid going out in the sun and whenever one goes out in summer, the head and the back of the neck should be covered with cloth, or else the head may be covered with wet cloth or towel soaked in water. Also, Intake of products that have a cooling, soothing and calming effect on our system would be beneficial.

  • Green mango pulp
  • Panna i.e. soup made of raw mangoes
  • Ripe tamarind pulp
  • Roasted raw Mango
  • Drinking plenty of water and liquids
  • Onions for heat stroke
  • Plums
  • Coriander and Mint leaves
  • Butter Milk
