Lemon: Amazing Health Food with Awesome Home Remedies

Ever since the colas have come under suspicion, one drink that has gained value and a wide acceptance is ‘nimbu-paani’. The lemons that were till now considered to be a secondary choice are quite sought after. All the more, even the youngsters and children swear on the virtues of this harmless, yet beneficial fruit.

Belonging to the family Ruteaceae, the Latin name of lemon is Citrus limon. In the Ayurvedic texts, it is referred by the name Jambeer and in English it is called as the lemon of India.

Lemon is found extensively in all parts of India to a height of five thousand feet. The commonly known tree of lemon grows 10 to 12 feet tall. It bears thorns and the fruit is generally oval, green to yellow coloured and sour. The part used for medicinal purposes is the fruit, leaves and also the bark of the tree.

Properties

The lemon is heavy and intense by nature and hot in potency. The taste as well as after taste are sour. Chemically, there is presence of citric acid as the prime content. Therefore, lemon is one of the best known natural sources of Vitamin C. Other than this, there also exists a yellow coloured volatile oil.

Health Virtues

Being hot and sour, lemon is believed to be a destroyer of the air and phlegm humors of the body and yet it tends to increase the fire.

Appetizer

Lemon is a wonderful appetizer. A few drops of the lemon juice dissolved into a glassful of water taken half an hour before each meal could combat the loss of hunger. Another easy remedy I would suggest is to sprinkle some lemon juice on a piece of fresh ginger and take it preceding a meal.

Digestive

The lemon juice in prescribed quantities is advocated in the ailments like indigestion, dyspepsia, excessive wind formation and abdominal distention. In either of the maladies, let me suggest a lemon drink. To a glass of lukewarm water, add the juice of one fourth of a freshly cut lemon. Add to the same a mixture of equal quantities of powders of black pepper, cumin seeds, dry coriander, thyme and black salt. Though this could provide relief in many cases, yet it is not advisable for those suffering from hyper – acidity.

Relieves Nausea & Vomiting

The lemon juice is also recommended for those who suffer from the sensation of nausea. For this purpose, you could take a lemon drink supplemented with a generous amount of sugar. Or simply lick a freshly sliced lemon. This is quite useful during the nausea associated with travelling. Another easy home-remedy – Peel the lemon skin and dry it. This is then to be burnt and the ashes thus produced can be taken to find relief.

Expectorant

Lemon is believed to be a good expectorant. The juice is advised in the persistent, dry cough in which the phlegm remains stuck.

For Lethargy

A spoonful lemon juice and a spoonful of sugar along with a pinch of salt. Mix this lemon syrup into a glass of water and take every two hours.

Beauty Aid

So as to boost your complexion, try mixing some lemon juice into honey and apply on the face before washing. This also acts as a cleanser. Washing of the hair with lemon drops added to the water could provide a better bounce and shine and remove the grease.
