Give this a thought – We are always attached to something in this material world, even though we know that we have to depart one day. This begs the question: why are we so attached and to what? Attachment in a way stems from insecurity.

Our Purpose Of Life

We depend on everyone and everything that touches our lives. And this is human nature. Even though we fight for our rights and do our duties, we are also attached to the comforts and pleasures of life. There’s nothing wrong in this or is there? The problem is that we are absorbed in all this to the extent that we disregard our purpose in life.

Watching Out As A Spectator

But what are we here for? Only to live, work, earn, enjoy the fame, do our duty, attain prosperity and leave behind all this for coming generations who might or might not care? Nothing is indispensable and all of us have to leave today or tomorrow. Yet, how many times in our lives do we watch ourselves as spectators?

The Realization

In my practice as a doctor, I have been pained by the suffering of my patients. It is human to feel the pain of fellow humans, but at the same time if a doctor has to provide the right treatment he has to come out of this feeling. The doctor has to detach.

Another example is a more common feature in our Indian homes, when there are occasional quarrels among children. The kids bring the issue to you, the parent, trusting that you would do the right thing. Here again you have to detach and look at the matter as a third person.

It is similar with our lives. It is only when we detach, that we are able to realize our basic potential and purpose of our life which is actually a minute reflection of the universal being.
