Terminalia Arjuna has been used in Traditional Ayurveda to balance the three types of “dosha”: Kapha ,vata, and Pitta. Also it has been used as medicine for asthma , scorpion stings, bile disorders, and poisoning.

Vagbhatta an Indian physician has been credited as the first person to use Arjuna for heart conditions in the seventh century A.D. Since 1930s research on Arjuna has been going on.

Arjuna is also very effective for maintaining cardiac functioning and blood pressure. The bark of Arjuna is rich in saponnins, antioxidents , gallic acid, ellagic acid, and minerals including calcium, magnesium, zinc and copper. It has anti diabetic, diuretic, hypotensive and anti acne properties.

The compound called Saponin enhances pumping action of heart. The calcium and magnesium in Arjuna are responsible for improving muscle function. The antioxidant strengthens veins and prevents heart disease. Arjuna has ability to reduce the blood’s absorption of lipids.

 

 

Usages of Arjuna

  • Cardiovascular diseases: Powdered tree bark of Arjuna has being used for treating angina and other cardiovascular conditions from ancient times in India.
  • A substance in Arjuna herb, casuarinin, inhibits breast cancer cell growth .
  • It can be used to protect the liver and to treat respiratory conditions, including respiratory tract infections, cough, and sore throat.
  • As an antioxidant:  Its stem bark possesses glycosides, large quantities of flavonoids, tannins and minerals
  • Cholesterol Balancer: Compounds in Arjuna herb may help maintain healthy cholesterol levels
  • DNA protection: Arjuna has compounds that protect against DNA damage from toxins.
  • Heart Diseases:  increasing coronary artery flow and protecting cardiac tissue against severe damage. Arjuna herb has also been detected to have diuretic, blood thinning, prostaglandin enhancing properties.

Arjuna Dosage

  • In powder form: 3-6 gm two or three times a day or as directed by physician.
  • As Decoction: 20-40 ml two times a day in the concentration of 1:2 or as per directed by physician.
  • It can also be taken as extracted juice or Ksheer – paka.
