Seasonal Allergies

 

Changing seasons bring with them a number of seasonal allergies mostly in the form of throat infections. Respiratory ailments like common cold, sore throat, recurrent bouts of cough (usually allergic type), pain and inflammation in the throat, fevers and asthma are common.

 

Ayurveda Recommendations for Seasonal Allergies

  • Start immediately with saline water gargles at the slightest perception of throat irritation.

  • Gargles with Alum mixed in water acts as an antiseptic for the throat.

  • In case of dry cough, it is essential to provide lubrication to the throat. You can take a glass of milk with a teaspoon of ghee or 5 to 10 drops of almond oil or ‘Badam-Rogan’ added to it.

  • Steam inhalation is supportive to the recommended therapy as this results into a better expectoration.

  • Local massage on the chest and the throat region with mustard oil or any medicated oil or balm could prove helpful.

  • Dietary regimen plays an important role in getting rid as well as preventing the re-occurrence of seasonal allergies. The diet should consist more of light, warm and easily digestible foodstuffs like vegetable soups. Cold drinks, spicy and fried foods, curd and sour eatables need to be avoided.

  • Breathing exercises like ‘Pranayama’ are extremely helpful as these aid the body to not only combat the disease, but also in the long run enhance immunity levels.

Ayurveda Home Remedies & Herbs for Allergies

    • Vitamin C in any form enhances recovery from seasonal allergy. The fruit of Amla (Indian Gooseberry) is rich source of the same. Fresh juice or dried Aamla powder (half a teaspoon) can be taken 2 or 3 times a day.

    • Powder prepared by pounding roots of the herb Liquorice or Mulethi (approx. one fourth of a teaspoon) can be taken twice a day mixed into half a teaspoon of honey.

    • A decoction prepared by boiling natural herbs like black pepper, thyme, liquorice root, cardamom seeds, basil and ginger proves helpful. This can be sweetened with mishri (Crystalline sugar) or mixed into honey for better results.

    • As another easy home remedy for seasonal allergies, take freshly ground leaves of Holy Basil along with a few drops of ginger juice. This helps to increase the resistance power to fight respiratory ailments and seasonal allergies.
