Thyroid disease is mainly the disease in which the working of thyroid gland in the body is affected, either decreased or increased. There are two basic types of thyroid disease – Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism. Hypothyroidism is a more common condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce a sufficient amount of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Whereas, hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid is overactive and is producing hormones in excess.

Thyroid gland is the master gland of metabolism in our body. This means that when the thyroid gland is affected and is not able to function properly, it will have effect on your health. Thyroid disease, particularly Hypothyroidism may present a wide variety of symptoms.

Although , the most common symptoms of thyroid disease are –

  • weight gain,
  • periods of anxiety and depression
  • and occasional fall in the energy levels.
  • Generally the digestion seems to be affected there may or may not be indigestion,
  • but many time severe and recurrent constipation and improper clearance of bowels is there.
  • The skin may show more dryness and the hair become brittle resulting into hair-fall.
  • Also, there could be symptoms of Joint pains and muscular aches that are common in thyroid disease.
  • Not only this, women may present symptoms like menorrhagia (heavy and prolonged menstruation) and infertility.

Whereas in case of hyperthyroidism, there are symptoms like anxiety, rapid heart rate, deep shallow respiration, diarrhoea, heat intolerance, flushing, menstrual disturbance, fatigue and bulging of eyes.
