Ayurveda believes that our body is composed of 5 basic elements namely ether or space, earth, water, fire and air. Each of these serves a specific and important function that manages all bodily principle energies known as doshas viz. Vata dosha (air body humor), Pitta dosha (Fire body humor) and Kapha dosha (Phlegm body humor). Each person has a unique blend of these elements, which makes the structure and is called as Prakriti or the innate constitution of the person. Of these 5 basic elements, Ether and Air combine together and make the Vata dosha having movement as its prime quality. Similarly, Pitta dosha or the fire body humor is mainly the consequence of fire element which represents heat and metabolism. The elements of Water and Earth combine to form the Kapha dosha or the phlegm body humor which is particularly responsible for providing structure. Since every individual is different, Ayurvedic system of treatments, therapies and medication is highly personalized and is based on the needs of the individual depending on the body type and the kind of imbalances.
