Panchakarma Ayurvedic Detox

As per Ayurveda, the state of perfect health and well-being is dependent on the body’s capability to metabolize all facets of life. This includes integrating holistic healthcare by means of nourishment of body tissues, eliminating the toxins and restoring the balance.  Both Digestion and Detox are highly essential because if the food that we take is not digested properly, the undigested sustenance accumulates in the body tissues in the form of toxins, thus creating an imbalance and this further takes form of a number of diseases.

Panchakarma Ayurvedic Detox Program

Ayurveda offers Panchakarma as a holistic mind – body cleansing process that restores balance and wellbeing as well as strengthens the immune system. Panchakarma meaning “5 therapies” in Sanskrit and this is very effective Ayurvedic treatment used for ages in Ayurvedic therapy for cleansing toxins (ama) produced in the body due to wrong lifestyle and poor nutrition that blocks the flow of energy throughout the body thus leading to diseases. The five therapies integrated in Ayurvedic therapeutic science that are part of Panchakarma treatment are Vamana, Virechana, Nasya, Basti and Raktamoskshana. The Ayurvedic Panchakarma detox program normally has 3 phases –

Purvakarma, Pradhankarma and Paschatkarma.

1. Purvakarma

This is a pre-treatment technique that helps to prepare the body to eliminate the ama /toxins. The first step is Snehana (oleation) that involves saturating the body with medicated oils, to loosen the toxins to move from deeper tissues in the gastrointestinal tract. Abhyanga (external oleation) involves body massage with medicated oils, followed by Swedana (steaming) to dilate the channels for easy removal of ama.

2. Pradhankarma

This is second step after Purvakarma. In the Panchakarma detox program, Ayurvedic Panchakarma therapies like Vamana (emesis), Virechana (purgation), Basti (enema) and Nasya (nose cleaning) are accomplished to remove the integrated toxins through normal body channels.

3. Paschatkarma

This is the third step that is related to recommendation and following of correct diet and healthy lifestyle to re-establish body’s natural immunity and metabolism. This post treatment procedure should not be ignored as it may lead to de-stabilization of the digestion process and continuous production of ama in the body.
