Foods
During the process of digestion, anything and everything that we consume tends to get broken down by the active enzymes present in our body. If, for example, we consume something that is fundamentally ‘hot’, let’s say an ice-cream, the enzymes would have to work extra hard to break down the fat in that ice-cream, in process, speeding up the whole digestive process. This eventually tends to heat-up our body and that makes us feel more active and alert. Similarly, other food products that contain more of fat, protein and carbohydrates generally add to the warmth in our body. Ushna foods or the foods with hot potency are basically known for promoting the pitta dosha type body constitution. According to Ayurveda healthy eating recommendations, the foods that are Shita or cold in potency are best recommended to be consumed during summers, since our body can really use the cooling effect that they offer. These could include water melon, green leafy vegetables etc. In fact, anything that contains a lot of water is very easy to digest, since it goes through the digestive system very quickly, producing less heat in the process. This results in giving us a cooling sensation. Spicy foods are also good to be consumed during summers, since they make us sweat and take the excess heat out of our body. Also, any food item that has been freshly prepared is the best for digestion, any given day. Whereas ‘hot’ foods give our mind and body a feeling of lightness, Shita powered foods tend to make it somehow heavier.
