For relieving pain, Ayurveda recommends Abhyanga or massaging the body with Sesame seed oil, olive oil, Mahanarayana oil, Bala or Ashwagandha mixes in Sesame seed oil or the Tila tailam, or oil massage mixed with heating herbs such as Ajawain or Dried Ginger. This is specific for pain arising due to Vata dosha imbalance as in case of back pain . Massage can be slow to mid-pressure to reduce the stiffness and dryness of the Vata dosha or the air body humor. During winters, you may generally perform a daily self-Abhyanga massage using warmer, heavier oils like sesame seed, mustard or almond oil. A simple home oil massage each morning or evening can help soothe Vata and also helps to remove ama toxins from the skin tissues.
