Intoxication or Addiction is not only physical or social but also a psychological problem which needs to be solved with holistic approach and proper treatment. Ayurveda offers a systematic approach in treatment of the cases of addiction and recommends Ayurvedic medicines, personal counselling, light exercises, yoga and meditation, as part of the de-addiction therapy. In the most famous ancient Ayurvedic text like Kashyapa, Sushrut, Charaka and Vangsen Samhita, Ayurveda talks about alcoholism and de-addiction under the heading of Madatyaya meaning intoxication and Panapakrama which refers to Alcohol withdrawal. The Science of Ayurveda focuses on holistic methods to annul the consequences of drugs, smoking and liquor addiction. As per Ayurveda, alcohol and drug addiction decreases the Ojas i.e. the essence of life in the human body, leading to imbalance in the Doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
Vata Imbalance – Vata dosha imbalance is indicated by insomnia, hallucinations, headache, anxiety, mood swings.
Pitta Imbalance – Digestive problems, fever, aggression, violence suggest aggravation and vitiation of the Pitta dosha in the body.
Kapha Imbalance – Vitiated Kapha dosha or the Phlegm body humor is specified by extreme lethargy, excessive sleep and nausea.
