One of the major digestive disorders of all, Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD as we know it, is a problem that has affected many, and possibly those from all age groups and various walks of life. Simply said, this particular problem tends to occur when the gastric juice in our body gets ‘refluxed’ or flowed back from the stomach into our oesophagus. Let’s learn more and understand how and why that happens, and the solutions, if any.

What is GERD?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is actually a digestive disorder that affects the lower oesophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the oesophagus and stomach which relaxes when it should not. Therefore, acid from stomach goes back up the oesophagus, causing a sensation of heartburn.

Most Likely Symptoms of GERD

Anything that we consume, on reaching the stomach, gets converted into juice. This juicy fluid is highly acidic in nature. That is why when a person suffers from the ailment of GERD, he or she might experience frequent, unexpected burps and a strange, acidic taste gets left behind in the mouth, also known as acid indigestion or acid reflux. A strange sensation of heartburn is also experienced, at times. On the other hand, some less frequent but sure indicators of GERD could also include excessive salivation, bad breath, sore throat, swelling of gums and even cavities in some cases. The matter is, however, more serious than you thought in case you start to suffer from unusual chest pain, apart from the above mentioned symptoms.

Simple, Everyday Solutions

GERD is something that each one of us is just as likely to suffer from. Sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy eating habits and taking the symptoms too casually are just some of the major reasons behind. However, studies indicate that those suffering from asthma are more prone face this problem. In fact, the problem of GERD gone unchecked could put asthmatics at a higher risk of suffering from some serious, further problems. This can cause irritation in their lungs, and sometimes even clog the same. On the other hand, it has been noticed that some pregnant women are more or less likely to face the problem of Gastroesophageal reflux disease. While medications are available, lifestyle changes and home remedies may be the best solution. Keeping the severity of this problem in mind, let us have a look at some of the preventive measures:

Natural Remedies for GERD

  • Eat small yet frequent portions of food. Avoid overeating at any given time of the day.
  • Avoid having any solid food at least three hours before you hit the bed
  • Never lie down immediately after a meal. Wait for good two to three hours and let your system really work out on the food.
  • Avoid consuming any alcoholic or citrus beverages. Also you need to avoid tomato-based products.
  • Coffee, chocolates and even peppermints should be evaded if you feel you could be suffering from GERD.
  • Try and get rid of any excessive weight that you may be having.
  • A teaspoonful of sodium bicarbonate dissolved in water has a pH of more than 7 and can neutralise the rising acid relieving the burning sensation.
  • Half a cup of Aloe vera juice taken before meals could soothe the stomach thereby reducing acid reflux.
  • Another easy remedy would be chewing a piece of sugar-free gum well for 30 min after meals as this can increase salivary production, thus diluting the accumulated stomach acids.
  • It is also recommended that you consciously keep the head elevated while sleeping.
  • You can mix approx. three teaspoons of apple cider vinegar into six to eight ounces of fresh water, and drink this mixture before each meal or before bedtime, or simply take it two to three times during the day.
  • Eat a ripe banana daily as this contains natural antacids that counter acid reflux.
