Anxiety disorder is a serious mental illness. For people with anxiety disorders, worry and fear are constant and overwhelming, and can be rather limiting. Anxiety manifests in various forms like stress, tension, apprehension and depression. Such disorders are caused by a combination of factors, including changes in the brain and environmental stress.

Ayurvedic Case Study: Centella asiatica and Anxiety

Brahmi or Centella asiatica is known in Ayurveda for its positive effects in curing neurological & stress related disorders. In a clinical study 33 patients (18 male and 15 female; average age 33 years) were administered 70% hydro – ethanolic extract of Centella asiatica to study its effect on generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). They were administered 500 mg / capsule, twice daily, after meals with Brahmi and were investigated thoroughly by using psychological rating scale at baseline day 0, 30 and final day 60 and also included direct queries about current levels of experienced stress.
The observations showed a positive result and revealed that Brahmi ingestion brought down the stress anxiety levels substantially with the baseline score of anxiety index reducing to 13.1% in 30 days and 26.0% in 60 days post treatment, while self-perceived stress also visibly improved 12.5% in 30 days and 23.2% in 60 days. The clinical trials prove that C. asiatica may be a safer alternative to Benzodiazepines for the therapy of stress related clinical disorders and is an effective remedy to reduce stress & anxiety.
