nocturia in men

The problem of Nocturia (frequent night time urination) is basically not a disease but could be the symptom of some other, possibly serious, underlying problems, or simply a temporary situation that one could happen to be facing.

 

What is Nocturia?

Nocturia is the state when one is woken up in the middle of the night to pass urine. The word ‘nocturia’ itself means night time urination. In this condition, the bladder tends to become little hyperactive during the night, and results in making people make more than two or more trips to the washroom.

 

Why Nocturia Progresses?

The reasons behind nocturia or the night time urination could be either or all of the following –

  • Consumption of more water than usual, especially before hitting the bed at night.
  • Non regulation of the overall fluid intake, and/or intake of excessive alcohol or caffeine.
  • The body is making more urine than normal.
  • The bladder is not able to hold urine for long.
  • Urinary tract infection or bladder infection, enlargement of the prostrate in men, diabetes or anxiety. These infections generally tend to cause repeated burning sensation and urgent need for urination throughout the day and also during night.

 

Men Are More Affected

Men, especially those in the age group of fifty and above, often face the need for frequent urination during the night-time. Though, signs and symptoms of nocturia may start appearing among men in their late forties, and tend to exacerbate as they age. This is a common and rather tricky condition among middle-aged folks and the seniors. This is because Nocturia is believed to affect men with an enlarged prostate gland. The prostate, having grown in size, tends to press the urethra and block the entire urine from passing through in one go. However, if the problem persists for long and interrupts your sleep cycle and quality of sleep, it is recommended to be concerned and seek medical attention.

 

Natural Remedies for Nocturia

Here are a few natural healthcare remedies which could be supportive to both prevent as well as treat the problematic condition of night time urination.

  • Chew some Kishmish (Raisins) before you hit the bed. These would help absorb any excess water from your vascular system, and delay the need for urination for quite some time.
  • Kaddu ke Beej (Pumpkin seeds) are believed to improve health of the bladder as well as prostate, and thus provide some relief from nocturia.
  • Loaded with antioxidants, grapefruit contains enzymes that help provide relief from the signs of nocturia. Grapefruit moreover helps remove toxins from our body, and hence, is also overall great for our health. You may drink grapefruit juice regularly as it is also a powerful antioxidant.
  • Some quantity of Brown Rice may be taken some time before sleeping as it also absorbs excessive water from our body.
  • Rice Vinegar or Chaaval Siraka is known to be a powerful antiseptic, and this could also help to clean your system of bacteria that might be causing nocturia.

 

Herbs For Relieving Nocturia –

Some herbs may be helpful in relieving nocturia as these help relax the bladder muscles naturally.

  • Witch hazel is a herb having anti-inflammatory properties and has a toning effect on the bladder. It helps to reduce the number of times you need to urinate at night.
  • Gotu kola is a herb also used to treat an uncontrolled bladder.
  • Saw palmetto is another useful herb which has the natural properties of being diuretic and antispasmodic.
  • Yarrow is one more herb that works and has antiseptic, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • The herb called Horsetail treats an overactive bladder.
  • Hydrangea is antispasmodic and antiseptic herb that is believed to support in relaxing the bladder muscles.

 

Essential Lifestyle Modifications

Dietary Habits –

  • Avoid consuming water or any beverages immediately before sleeping, and earnestly cut down on alcohol intake. This will be a big support for you to stay clear of this malady.
  • You need to reduce your caffeine intake, especially during late evenings.
  • Try to sip in only little amount of water, if you happen to be thirsty or your throat feels dry right before bedtime.
  • Habitually you would need to evade the consumption of diuretics.
  • Foods such as spices, chocolates, artificial sweeteners etc. are quite likely to increase the need for frequent urination at night.
  • Avoid drinking beverages such as tea, coffee, alcohol at least within four hours before bedtime.
  • Also try to elude spiced and fermented foods including baked products.

 

Sleep Tight And Cosy –

  • Try to keep your body warm and comfortable while sleeping.
  • You may use a top-sheet or something in order not to let your body get too cold, thus preventing the need for much urination at night.
  • Also, it is believed that if we sleep with our legs elevated, we tend to sleep better and be less disturbed.
