Ayurveda identifies Back pain as the result of Vata and Kapha dosha imbalances, aggravated by a build-up of ama. Vata dosha is the point of control for the pelvic area and the metabolism of bones. An imbalance of Vata and Kapha can lead to stiffness of the spine, and as a result a severe back pain may be experienced. The pain gets aggravated by Ama which produces toxins and impurities in the joints. Likewise, it is also important to keep the Apana Vata in check during the menstrual cycle as it can result in lower back pain. In the case of back pain, the increase of Vata obstructs with the ability of Kapha dosha to support and lubricate the spine. This dryness further aggravates Vata, creating a vicious cycle leading to back pain, aches and stiffness in the joints, and constipation. Ayurveda regards Ama or the toxins and impurities that accumulate in body as main reason for developing back and joint pain. This ama or the toxic matter gets accumulated in the joints, blocking joint movement and interfering with the production of fluid that lubricate the joints.
